Aims and Outcomes of the Programme

The programme aims of sociology

1. The department aims to equip its students with knowledge of the main concepts, principles, theoretical approaches and research methods of sociology.

2. To enable the students to examine the multiple dimensions of human behaviour, social events and phenomena, and to study the historical roots, development, functions and interrelationships of social institutions.

3. It aims to provide students with the appropriate skills and experience to produce the sociological knowledge needed to meet the needs of Turkey as a country undergoing rapid change.

4. It aims to develop professional ethics and sense of responsibility in addition to awareness of the social and universal implications (environmental issues, economy, sustainability, etc.) and legal consequences of the practices of the field.

The outcomes of the sociology programme

1. The student becomes aware of social, scientific and ethical values.

2. Be able to explain the difference between scientific and non-scientific sources of information.

3. Develop critical thinking skills.

4. Develop individual, social and sociological awareness.

5. Plan, carry out and interpret sociological research and projects using appropriate approaches, methods and techniques.

6. Acquire the main skills of interdisciplinary teamwork, and plan and carry out such work.

7. Describe and explain the concepts relating to the subfields of sociology.

8. He/she knows the conceptual approaches to the subfields of sociology and can evaluate current research.

9. Be aware of the need for lifelong learning.

10. Apply the theoretical knowledge acquired through education to understand and solve social problems encountered.
